“Life – The Epic Story of Our Mitochondria” is the most accessible book I have come across that explains the role of mitochondria in our lives. The book outline is based on Star Wars analogies to midochlorians which having a shocking amount of features in common. The Book is broken into three parts:
- The Force – basic cell biology / evolution / mitochondria roles
- Dark-Side of the Force – mitochondria and how it relates to disease and aging
- Nurturing the Force – improve mitochondria health through supplements, exercise and diet
This book was full of useful metaphors, stories and even humor. I found this to be just what I needed to get through the more technical sections. Definitely a recommended read to athletes or health enthusiasts who want to know what is going on under the hood. The discussion point I walked away with is that a lot of chronic western health issues could be related to energy deficiency due to dysfunctional mitochondria.
